The San Diego Padres are aiming for a sweep as they face the Texas Rangers, who are relying on a rookie left-hander for their starting pitcher. The Padres have been in good form recently and are hoping to continue their winning streak. The Rangers’ rookie pitcher will face a tough challenge against a strong Padres lineup. San Diego is determined to secure a sweep and maintain their positive momentum in the season. Both teams have much at stake in this matchup, making it an exciting pregame event..
Max Scherzer is a Ranger, but he wasn’t acquired in time to start Sunday’s finale against the Padres. So Texas manager Bruce Bochy will instead ask left-hander Cody Bradford to make his first career appearance against the Padres, who are seeking just their second three-game sweep of the season.
First pitch is at 1:10 p.m.
Bradford, a rookie, has a 4.94 ERA in five starts (23 2/3 IP) and a 4.06 ERA in 13 1/3 innings out the bullpen, which includes throwing five innings of two-run ball in his last appearance on July 25 as a bulk reliever.
Bradford has allowed eight homers in 37 innings so far and has been more effective so far against righties (.773 OPS) than lefties (.876).
The 25-year-old Bradford has a 4.00 ERA in 274 career innings as the minors, striking out 302 against 68 walks.
He was ranked the Rangers’ No. 23 prospect, by Baseball America, coming into the season, with his change-up grading out as his best weapon as “it kills spin effectively and can be a useful weapon in any count.”
So far in the majors, the change-up is sitting at roughly 82 mph and has been thrown 27 percent of the time off his 90.1 mph four-seamer (54.7 percent). He also boasts an 86 mph slider (16.3 percent) and seldom-used curve thrown in the low 80s.
The Padres will use both their catchers in the lineup a fifth straight day, this time with Gary Sanchez catching and batting eighth and Luis Campusano serving as the DH and batting seventh. Outside those two swapping positions, the lineup is identical to Saturday’s.
Here is how Texas will line up for the series finale:
Padres left-hander Blake Snell (7-8, 2.61 ERA) is entering his last start before the trade deadline leading the majors in both ERA and walks (64), which includes 12 over last two starts (1.64 ERA). Snell is 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA, 26 strikeouts and a 0.64 WHIP in three career starts (17 1/3 IP) against Texas, the last in 2019.
He has history with only four active Rangers:
- OF Robbie Grossman (3-for-8, 2 2Bs, RBI, BB, 3 Ks)
- 2B Marcus Semien (1-for-6, 2 BBs, 2 Ks)
- C Mitch Garver (2-for-6, 2 RBIs, 2 Ks)
- OF Travis Jankowski (1-for-2, K)
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy will turn to left-hander Cody Bradford for their game against the San Diego Padres. The rookie pitcher has a 4.94 ERA in five starts and a 4.06 ERA in relief appearances this season. He has shown more success against right-handed batters than left-handed batters. Bradford’s change-up is considered his best weapon, and he also throws a slider and curve. The Padres will have Gary Sanchez catching and batting eighth, with Luis Campusano serving as the DH and batting seventh. The Padres’ pitcher, Blake Snell, leads the majors in ERA and walks.
