The highly anticipated release of the new Mortal Kombat movie has been delayed. Originally set for a release in January 2021, the film’s debut has now been pushed back to April 16, 2021. Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, the Mortal Kombat reboot promises to be a thrilling adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The delay is likely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to multiple film releases being postponed to ensure a successful box office performance and the safety of moviegoers. Fans will have to wait a bit longer to witness the epic battles of their favorite Mortal Kombat characters on the big screen..
According to Variety, Warner Bros. has decided to push back the release of Mortal Kombat by one week.
It was supposed to be released April 16, but is now premiering in cinemas and HBO Max on April 23, 2021.
The reason behind this decision? Well, it’s got everything to do with the release of Godzilla vs Kong this week in the U.S. The film has done very well internationally, already making US$121 million at the global box office to date. It’s been a big hit in China, earning US$70 million in the opening weekend alone.
So, Warner Bros. decided to push back the release date of Mortal Kombat since it’s the next tentpole movie they have this year, and they don’t want one film to steal attention away from the other, in order to avoid cannibalizing ticket sales.
Also, some cinema capacity restrictions are meant to be lifted across the U.S this coming week. On tuesday this week, Los Angeles county moved into the state’s orange tier, which allows movie theaters to increase indoor capacity to 50% or 200 people. As we know, the Los Angeles market is one of the most popular movie markets in the U.S, so with these changes, and more people heading back to the theatres, they are hoping to capitalise on Godzilla vs Kong’s popularity.
This means we will have to wait a little while longer before Mortal Kombat makes its way into the world. Let’s hope it’s worth the wait.
