In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, revealed that her character was initially intended to be the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, the plan changed during the production of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Ridley admitted that she was initially surprised but understood the creative decision to make her character Rey Nobody. This change allowed her character to embody the idea that anyone can rise to greatness, emphasizing the theme of hope in the Star Wars universe..
During an interview with Josh Gad on Jimmy Kimmel Live (he was a guest host), Daisy Ridley was asked if she knew Rey’s parentage from the beginning of The Force Awakens.
Though Ridley laughed it off, and was her usual charming self, her answers suggest that Rey’s parentage and backstory was never a consistent thing.
She said: “No. At the beginning there was toying with an Obi-Wan connection, and then there were, like, different versions. And then it really went to that she was no one. And then it came to Episode 9, and J.J. pitched me the film and was like, ‘Oh yeah, Palpatine’s your grandaddy,’ and I was like, ‘Awesome.’ And then two weeks later he was like, ‘Oh, we’re not sure’. So it kept changing, so then even after filming, and I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be.”
When Gad asked Ridley who Rey’s grandmother is, she followed up with: “You tell me, Josh.” This makes it evident that there isn’t a canon answer to this question, and if there is, Ridley doesn’t know it.
Ridley isn’t opposed to reprising the role, but she does feel that “Rise of Skywalker was tied up with a bow”, marking the end of Rey’s story, as well as Ridley’s presence in the franchise.

During an interview with Josh Gad on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Daisy Ridley discussed Rey’s parentage in the Star Wars franchise. She revealed that throughout the series, Rey’s backstory and parentage changed multiple times. Initially, there were considerations for an Obi-Wan connection, and then it was decided that Rey was no one significant. However, in Episode 9, J.J. Abrams pitched the idea that Palpatine was Rey’s grandparent, but even that was uncertain. Ridley admitted that she wasn’t sure about the answer even after filming. This suggests that there isn’t a definitive answer to Rey’s lineage. Ridley also believes that “Rise of Skywalker” brought closure to Rey’s story and her own involvement in the franchise.
