The trailer for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming film “Midway” promises an explosive action-packed experience but offers little else. The movie is based on the real-life Battle of Midway during World War II, which is considered a turning point in the war. The trailer showcases intense battle scenes, impressive visual effects, and a star-studded cast including Woody Harrelson and Luke Evans. However, it lacks depth in terms of character development and narrative. Overall, the trailer for “Midway” appears to be focused primarily on delivering thrilling action sequences rather than a compelling story..
Should anyone be familiar with Roland Emmerich, they’ll know what to expect from just about any of his films. Explosions, saturated colors, and all-star casts surrounded by – well – explosions and saturated colors. Emmerich has another one on the way. Midway. Much like his previous films, Emmerich’s World War Two epic looks packed with explosions but not much substance.
The trailer opens with shots of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which is dubbed the “greatest intelligence failure in American history.” This is followed by a brief interchange between Patrick Wilson and a superior officer over where the next attack will be. Wilson asserts the Japanese are aiming for Midway, to which he is told, “Washington disagrees.” It isn’t long before there’s a plethora of explosions, dogfights, and a brief mention of how, “We can prove the American navy is not a joke.” The music is epic and the action builds and – well, you get the picture.
It’s an exciting trailer no doubt about it, but let’s face it. With Roland Emmerich’s track record including Independence Day, Godzilla, The Patriot, and The Day After Tomorrow, it’s safe to say that viewers will need to tread lightly with this one. There will be exciting battle sequences and an all-star cast portraying real life figures, yes. For sure, there will be a message about how America did not go quietly into the night during one of its darkest hours. But whether it is truly an honest attempt to honor those who served in this pivotal moment in American history is to be determined.
Midway will be released in cinemas November 8th.
