The official trailer for Sam Mendes’ upcoming film, 1917, has been released, transporting viewers back to the horrors of World War I. The film follows two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, who are given a nearly impossible mission to deliver a crucial message on the frontlines. The trailer showcases the intense and immersive nature of the film, with stunning cinematography that draws viewers into the brutal reality of war. With a talented cast and Mendes’ direction, 1917 promises to be a gripping and harrowing depiction of the Great War..
The official trailer for Sam Mendes’ latest film 1917 has sprung itself into the world, giving us massive Dunkirk vibes in the process. The soundscape, the visuals, it does feel a little reminsicent of Nolan’s 2017 film. Mendes has been inspired by Nolan before. Nolan’s treatment of the Batman narrative inspired Mendes to change up the usual James Bond narrative, and go darker and grittier for Skyfall. In the end, the audience is the one who benefits from such inspirations; Skyfall was a great movie (don’t come for me James Bond superfans) and 1917 looks like it will be a treat as well.
The film has a Saving Private Ryan type of thing going on, where a soldier has to deliver a message to the second battalion about a trap that they are walking into, a battalion that his brother is a part of. The lives of 1600 men are at stake, so the cost is high if they fail in their mission.
The film is produced by Steven Spielberg’s company Amblin Partners, with Spielberg himself describing the film as “hugely daring and ambitious”. 1917 boasts a star-studded cast, with the likes of Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard Madden. The first world war seems to be a popular period to explore of late, with Matthew Vaughn’s The King’s Man, a prequel to his Kingsman movies, also set during the Great War.
1917 will be released in theatres January 10, 2020.
