Serkis’ amazing work in motion capture roles and crafting characters like Gollum definitely makes him a fantastic choice to properly develop and bring the symbiote to life on screen. The first Venom movie didn’t get the best critical response, only receiving 29% on rotten tomatoes. However, it performed decently at the box office, raking in 856 million USD. A Screenrant article attributes this to the movie’s outstanding performance in overseas markets like China, and the fact that it shared its opening week with A Star Is Born, which caters to a whole different set of folks. Hence, it is no surprise that Sony decided to continue on with the franchise while the enthusiasm and momentum still exists.
The first movie teased the appearance of Carnage (played by Woody Harrelson) in the end credits scene, though it is unclear if Serkis’ vision will include him. We shall have to wait and see if Serkis’ directorial efforts can bring a positive critical reception to the franchise.
