Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Productions are partnering to create a movie adaptation of the popular video game ‘Ghost of Tsushima.’ The action-adventure game, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, was released in 2020 and received critical acclaim for its immersive storytelling and stunning visuals. The film will be produced by Sony Pictures with Chad Stahelski, renowned for directing the ‘John Wick’ series, attached as the director. Fans are excited to see their favorite samurai adventure come to life on the big screen and are eagerly awaiting more details regarding the cast and release date..
According to Deadline, Sony and PlayStation Productions are making a film adaptation of the action adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. They have also tapped on John Wick’s Chad Stahelski to direct the feature film.
The game is centered on samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who finds himself having to set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior in order to pursue freedom for Tsushima.
In a statement, the head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash commented: “We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”
Considering the love for the game and its popularity (the game recently sold over 6.5 million copies since its July 2020 debut), the decision to adapt it for film comes as no surprise. Movies based on games haven’t really performed well with the critics (the best performing games movie seems to be Angry Birds 2 – what?), but the box office returns are a different story.
Ghost of Tsushima is PlayStation 4’s fastest selling first-party original IP debut, selling more than 2.4 million units worldwide in its first 3 days, with one of its main selling points being its narrative, making it perfectly suitable for film adaptation.
Stahelski is about to start shooting John Wick 4 though, so it may be a while before this project is up and running.
