Sony Pictures has officially debunked the rumors surrounding the potential casting of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the upcoming Spider-Man film. Speculation arose that the two former Spider-Men would feature alongside Tom Holland in the highly anticipated crossover. Sony dismissed these claims, stating that the reports were false, and that Maguire and Garfield would not be reprising their roles. While fans may be disappointed, it seems that the upcoming film will solely focus on Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man, without any appearances from previous actors who took on the iconic role..
ET Canada reached out to Sony about the casting rumours regarding Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield joining the cast of Spider-Man 3. A spokesperson for Sony responded: “Those rumoured castings are not confirmed.” However, the statement doesn’t deny the possibility of this happening, just that it’s not confirmed.
How Did The Rumours Start?
The casting rumours of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield gained traction after Jamie Foxx was announced to be resuming his role as Electro in Spider-Man 3. Since Foxx already played Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans started speculating about a possible multiverse storyline. This gained even more traction after Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Stephen Strange joined the cast as well, since he is set to explore parallel realities in his own sequel.
However, Foxx’ return could be the matter of a contract, due to Sony’s initial plans to develop a Sinister Six film, until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopped so badly that they abandoned all projects associated with it.
Once again, this doesn’t take away from the possibility of a live-action version of Into the Spider-Verse. However, it would be weird of Sony to include similar elements, since there will already be a sequel for Into the Spider-Verse releasing soon in 2022.
Movie Details
Filming has already begun for Spider-Man 3, if the filming notices plastered in New York are to be believed. Currently, what is confirmed is that Jon Watts is returning to direct the film, with stars Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Tony Revolori, and Jacob Batalon resuming their roles.
The movie is currently due for release on December 17, 2021.
