On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will face the Las Vegas Raiders in a highly anticipated NFL matchup. The Steelers are hoping to start their season strong by securing a victory on Irish soil, as the game will be broadcasted in Dublin. Both teams are expected to bring their A-game, with the Steelers aiming to make their first win after tying with the Cleveland Browns in their previous game. The Raiders, on the other hand, are coming off a successful victory against the Baltimore Ravens and are looking to maintain their momentum. This thrilling matchup promises high intensity and excitement for football fans..
Reasons for Irish eyes – and ears – to pay attention to the NFL are growing by the week, first with Daniel Whelan signing for the Packers, and now with the growing commitment of the Pittsburgh Steelers to Ireland.
Sky Sports coverage of the Steelers Week 1 game against the 49ers included an interview with team owner Art Rooney II, who outlined his desire to bring a game to Ireland in the near future, having last played in Dublin back in 1997.
And now the Steelers have joined up with Off The Ball to broadcast the team’s official radio coverage of their games throughout the season.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing live Steelers games to the radio in Ireland. Terrible towels at the ready. The team’s commitment to Ireland is long established, and we’ve seen over the last two decades how the NFL has gone from niche to mainstream. Having the Steelers available week in and week out to an Irish audience, with the atmospheric radio commentary that they do so well in America will be brilliant for Irish sports fans” said OTB’s Ger Gilroy.
So what is there to tune into?
Tonight’s Sunday Night Football fixture sees the Steelers travel to the Las Vegas Raiders, with both teams at 1-1 for the season. Both squads have room to improve, with Steelers QB Kenny Pickett in need of re-finding his offense’s pre-season form that had them tipped as dark horses to win the AFC North, a Division where the favoured Bengals have fallen flat.
Pickett pulled off a last-minute game-winning drive to edge the Raiders in Pittsburgh last Christmas Eve, the first real signs that he had the potential to become a franchise quarterback. Yet the leap Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expected from Pickett in his second season has instead looked more like a step back. Pickett is completing just 60 per cent (46 of 76) of his passes and has looked shaky under pressure.
Pittsburgh’s offensive line has struggled and Las Vegas, outside of defensive end Maxx Crosby, can’t get into opposing backfields. This could be an opportunity for the Steelers to finally establish a run game and give Pickett time to throw. Or it could be Raiders chance to disrupt an offence.
The Raiders meanwhile, welcome new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to his home opener. This Week 3 clash is a chance to prove to the nation that the move for the former 49ers ace was a positive one and not a sideways switch from the ejected Derek Carr. Against the Broncos in Week 1, ‘Jimmy G’ showed his potential to make big plays, but also to make questionable decisions. It may be up to the coaches to get the best out of him.
After a win on Monday night last week, we could be set for another primetime Pittsburgh win.
