The recently released trailer for “The Call of the Wild” showcases a heartwarming bond between Harrison Ford and a CGI dog named Buck. In the film, Ford’s character ventures into the Alaskan wilderness, where he forms an unlikely friendship with Buck, a dog who has been stolen from his home and forced to become a sled dog. The trailer highlights the relationship between the two, with Ford’s character narrating the story as they navigate the challenges and dangers of the harsh environment. The film is set to hit theaters in February 2020 and is based on Jack London’s classic novel..
The first trailer for next year’s The Call of the Wild has been released by 20th Century Fox. The film is based on the novel by Jack London, and stars Harrison Ford as John Thornton, a man who forms a strong bond with a dog named Buck, who helps to pull his sled as he delivers mail across the frozen wilds of Alaska. The supporting cast includes Bradley Whitford, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, and Dan Stevens.
The Call of the Wild will be the first live action film directed by Chris Sanders, who previously co-directed Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. Filming took place last year in Los Angeles and British Columbia, with the effects later being provided by Moving Picture Company.
You won’t be able to tell from the trailer, but the dog is entirely CGI. Considering how awful the digital effects looked in the trailers for this year’s Cats movie, the fact that Buck looks damn near photorealistic is a pleasant reminder of the fact that effects are moving forward instead of regressing.
Most of the films released by 20th Century Fox since they were acquired by Disney back in March have not been hits, so we can only hope The Call of the Wild performs strongly. Admittedly, a $91 million budget film based on a classic 1903 novel may be a tough sell in today’s market of sci-fi and superhero blockbusters, but the presence of an A-lister like Harrison Ford should help The Call of the Wild appeal to cinema goers. We’ll know for sure how strongly the film connects with audiences when it opens in wide release on February 21, 2020.
