Acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, renowned for works like “The Social Network,” is set to direct a new film shedding light on the dark aspects of Facebook. Sorkin aims to delve into the platform’s negative impacts on society, privacy concerns, and the addictive nature of social media. He hopes to show the dual nature of Facebook: its potential for good and the adverse effects it has had on individuals and the world. Taking inspiration from real-life events, the film aims to provoke discussions about social media’s influence and spur viewers to reflect on their own usage..
In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Academy Award winning writer Aaron Sorkin, whose sophomore feature film The Trial of the Chicago 7 comes out on Netflix this month, says he’s more than happy to come back for a sequel to The Social Network.
“I do want to see it.” said Sorkin. “People have been talking to me about it. What we’ve discovered is the dark side of Facebook.”
Possible Narrative
The possible narrative here has to do with Roger McNamee, who initially invested in Facebook. McNamee was so unhappy with his experience with the company, that he wrote a book about it, called Zucked! (10 points to him for a great title). What McNamee was not happy about was Facebook being used to spread political disinformation, and despite approaching Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg about the situation, there was nothing being done to rectify the situation.
Sorkin, while recollecting his conversations with McNamee, said: “Sandberg and Zuckerberg seem uninterested in doing anything about it. This all ends up with McNamee in a Senate basement secure conference room briefing Senate Intelligence subcommittee members on how Facebook is bringing down democracy. ‘We have a huge problem here and something needs to be done about it.’”
What’s the One Condition?
Sorkin’s one condition for writing the sequel is that David Fincher has to come back and direct it. The pair worked together for the first movie and created something so impactful that many view it as the best film of the 2010s.
While both Sorkin and Fincher have quite a bit on their respective plates now, Facebook is still such a prevalent part of our lives that we could afford to wait ten years for the sequel. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
