Additionally, “Sword Art Online: Progressive – Aria of a Starless Night” explores the origin story of Kirito and Asuna as they navigate a deadly virtual reality world. Anime enthusiasts have much to look forward to in 2023..
Anime fans are always looking for the next best thing to put on their watchlists, whether it’s incoming anime series or new anime movies.
The recent years in anime have been about classic anime making comebacks. In 2022, anime fans saw movies from oldies but goodies like Dragon Ball Super, Detective Conan, and Doraemon. 2023 is going to continue that trend while also showing movies from newer series, as well as original films. Here are the best new anime movies of 2023 that you should check out.
NOTE: Not all of these movies have confirmed release dates yet. We will update this release schedule when we have more info.
Anime Movies 2023
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War: The First Kiss Never Ends | February 15th, 2023
Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures
Romance anime usually end when the couple finally kisses, so it’s a treat when an anime decides to push through and watch their romance develop further. Kaguya and Miyuki will give the fans the payoff they’ve been waiting for as the couple explores their blossoming emotions now that they’re out in the open.
The Kaguya-sama website states that this anime movie is coming out sometime in February 2023.
Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia | March 3rd, 2023
Animation Studio: Shin Ei Animation
Doraemon fans have another great year ahead of them with a new Doraemon anime movie. The Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars remake, which came out this year, was a huge hit with the fans and the box office. Now, with its 42nd movie, Doraemon is hoping to make another huge splash in the theaters.
As the title implies, this movie will feature Doraemon, Nobita, and their friends going to a magical paradise somewhere in the sky.
A short teaser trailer reveals that Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia will be taking off on March 3rd, 2023.
Black Clover: Sword Of The Wizard King | March 31st, 2023
Animation Studio: Pierrot
Almost two years after the last episode of the series, Black Clover is coming back with Sword of the Wizard King. The movie’s plot is a little vague because it will be a completely original story that isn’t from the manga. One significant detail that’s been revealed is that Conrad Leto, the former Wizard King, will be playing an important role in the film.
According to a tweet from the official Black Clover Twitter account, it will come out on March 31st, 2023.
Overlord The Movie: The Holy Kingdom | Summer 2023
Animation Studio: Madhouse
After Overlord: Season 4’s finale in September, fans are clamoring for more. Fortunately, they don’t have to wait very long because a new Overlord anime movie is coming out in 2023.
Overlord the Movie: The Holy Kingdom will adapt the light novel’s Paladin of the Holy Kingdom story arc. It will be about the time when the Roble Holy Kingdom is left with no other choice than to rely on Ainz to defeat the demon Jaldabaoth.
My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! Movie | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: SILVER LINK
The isekai lovers out there will be glad to hear there are a couple of isekai movies coming out in 2023. The first of which is a movie for My Next Life as a Villainess. Catarina will continue her hilarious adventures after her graduation from the Academy.
So far, the movie’s plot has been kept under wraps. But if the movie decides to follow the light novels, it will show Catarina starting to work at the Magical Ministry as she continuously tries to avoid the bad endings she thought were over.
Zombie Land Saga: Beyond Revenge | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: MAPPA
The Zombie Land Saga movie’s title isn’t actually fully confirmed yet. It’s either Beyond Revenge or Zombies VS Aliens, but since the latter was “announced” as an April Fool’s joke a couple of years ago, Beyond Revenge might be more likely.
However, because of the Zombies VS Aliens fakeout and the ending of the last season, the movie’s plot is probably going to be about Franchouchou getting some extraterrestrial rivals on the big screen.
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: Yumeta Company
Davis and his Digimon Veenom meet a mysterious boy named Rui Owada. Rui claims to be the first person to ever be partnered with a Digimon, and he even has a Digivice to prove it. For some reason, though, he seems to be missing the most important thing: a Digimon.
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning is a sequel to Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna and will be Digimon Adventure’s series finale.
Psycho-Pass Providence | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: Production I.G
Unlike the other movies on this list, Psycho-Pass Providence will be a prequel. It occurs before the third season and will possibly cover Atsushi Shindo’s story and why exactly he committed suicide prior to the events in Psycho-Pass.
That’s just speculation based on what happens in the series’ post-credits scene and what you can see in the trailer though. No official plot has been revealed yet.
Yuri!!! On ICE The Movie: Ice Adolescence | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: MAPPA
MAPPA fans are eating good in 2023 with yet another movie that’ll be animated by them. Romance and sports fans also have something to look forward to since the movie in question is from the critically acclaimed Yuri on Ice series.
Though admittedly, the movie might lean a little less on the romance side. Ice Adolescence seems to focus on a young Victor and his battle at the Olympics. This means that Yuri might not even make an appearance in the film. Not a significant one anyway.
Garden Of Remembrance | TBC 2023
Animation Studio: Science SARU
Here’s a movie that’s completely unrelated to any anime series. Garden of Remembrance will be an original story that deals with grief through the eyes of a young girl who lost a close friend.
Garden of Remembrance is a beautiful musical directed by Naoko Yamada (director of K-On! and A Silent Voice), so you know the soundtrack is going to be iconic.
It’s a short film, so it’s not going to be as long as anything else on this list, but it looks incredibly promising and is probably going to tug at a lot of people’s heartstrings this coming year.
