The recently released official trailer for the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot has left many viewers underwhelmed. The trailer showcases the three female leads, played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, as they embark on various action-packed missions. However, the response has been lukewarm, with criticisms focusing on a lack of originality and a predictable plot. Many viewers feel that the trailer fails to generate excitement or spark interest in the film. Overall, the trailer for Charlie’s Angels has received a rather lackluster response from audiences, leaving some doubtful about the film’s potential success..
The official trailer for the new Charlie’s Angels movie is out in the world, with Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott as the Angels of this generation, taking over from Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. Elizabeth Banks is Bosley, which provides an interesting contrast to the usual depiction of Bosley as an incompetent man brought in for the laughs. Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou are familiar faces glimpsed in the trailer, and while we assumed Stewart was playing Charlie, according to IMDb, he is listed as Bosley as well.
Scott’s character is not initially an Angel, coming into contact with Stewart’s Sabina and Balinska’s Jane because she needed protecting. The new Angels are certainly a diverse bunch, with Scott being half Indian and Balinska possessing mixed ethnicity as well. There is emphasis on female empowerment, with Stewart’s opening lines in the movie stressing that women can do anything they set their minds to. The Angels are smart (Scott’s Elena is a programmer), resourceful and beautiful. There is certainly less objectification of women’s bodies happening here compared to the earlier set of movies.
However, it doesn’t look particularly innovative and feels fairly generic in its conception. It seems that of late the key to dealing with remakes or reboots is to amp up the diversity of the cast and sell the movie as something new and groundbreaking because there is now greater representation. That’s simply not how it works – movies need well-developed narratives and characters to create lasting impact.
Charlie’s Angels will be released in November 2019, so it remains to be seen if the movie can rise above the quality we see in the trailer. The theme song by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey is dope though.
