The release of Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s film “The Current War” is back on track after it was put on hold due to the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The movie, which tells the story of the rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over the electrical power system, is now set to be released in October 2019. The film originally premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival but was delayed in the wake of the allegations against Weinstein. Now, with the rights acquired by 101 Studios, the much-anticipated movie will finally hit the screens later this year..
It’s been a tough road, but the Alfonso Gomez-Rejon film The Current War is finally going to be released. New distributor 101 Studios announced in a press conference Tuesday that the film will play in theaters starting October 4th of this year, and it will be the inaugural release for the freshman company. The Current War stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, and the film chronicles his longtime rivalry with George Westinghouse, played by Michael Shannon.
The film was shot clear back in December of 2016, with a planned release in the fall of 2017. However, since the film was produced by The Weinstein Company, and with the fallout of Harvey Weinstein occurring a few months before release, the film was dropped. It also didn’t help that the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival that same year didn’t exactly have glowing reviews.
To help with that, 101 has assisted in presenting a new cut of the film. There was no clarification if this meant new footage was shot, or if the new version will be shortened or extended with deleted scenes. Regardless, given the historical figures present in the film, Edison, Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla, played by Nicholas Hoult, I think there is an audience for the film, and hopefully the results will fare better than they did two years ago at TIFF.
The film also stars Katherine Waterston, Matthew Macfadyen, and Tom Holland. The opening on October 4th will be limited, with a nationwide expansion planned the following week, October 11th.
