The Arizona native started playing rhythm guitar at the age of 13, and after hearing Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Started Something in high school, he fell in love with the bass. She has collaborated with well-known figures in the field such as Dave Stewart from Eurythmics and John Mayer. She is known for her infectious enthusiasm and exceptional approach. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler even supported him, saying, “Holy Funkadelic, I felt this girl’s vibe the first time I was around her.
We spoke with West, the bassist, about her musical influences, her first meeting with Prince, and the one piece of advice she still remembers from him before her gig. at the Singapore International Jazz Festival starting tomorrow.
What will your performance on SingJazz be like?
Lots of energy and funk. I really enjoy engaging audiences and keeping them entertained. Prince gave me a lot of DVD remakes of his old music videos. I am inspired by them because I watch them often. As a result, Prince’s performance has greatly influenced what I do, as well as the way I play and perform. Those who have never seen Prince perform live will surely enjoy.
How did you meet Prince, with whom you worked closely?
He discovered me on YouTube. He has been trying to contact me for a year, but no one has my phone number. One day, Prince asked during a rehearsal, “Does anyone know how to contact Nick West?” John Blackwell, his drummer, did.
Prince contacted me that evening and invited me to come hang out with him the next day. I was stunned; in fact, I didn’t even want to go because I was so scared. I don’t think I’m talented enough at this point because I feel it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I feel like I need to practice more because Prince is still out of my reach. As soon as I entered the set, he made me overcome my fear.
What is it like to work with a legendary person?
Prince is excellent. He showed me how to act out of the ordinary. He simply wanted me to be authentic, not trying to fit in with others. Be inspired by others, he advises, but be unique. Validated. That’s the only thing I learned from working with him. He just encouraged me to be honest. He let me be myself – crazy.
Whose music do you still listen to?
Tina Turner, Larry Graham and David Bowie. Sting and Paul McCartney, no doubt. My record company saw me first and they said, “Oh my God, a woman playing bass and leading a band, that’s really never happened before in the pop world.” Aside from Paul McCartney and Sting, no one has ever been famous for it. And I added, “Since it’s done, it can be done again.” So in my opinion these two musicians will be the main musical influences for me.
What kind of music are you listening to right now?
This is kind of weird because, despite the fact that I love music, I don’t really listen to it. However, a lot of the things that Bruno Mars produces are pretty good for me. It’s extremely modern and classic at the same time, which is really special. Albums by Emily’s D+Evolution and Esperanza Spalding. I really like her music because it is fusion and avant-garde, yet accessible to the masses. And no, I’m not just saying that because we’re close.
