Disney has announced that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will be available on its streaming service, Disney Plus, two months earlier than scheduled. The highly anticipated film will now be available for streaming starting May 4th, which is also known as Star Wars Day among fans. This move is seen as a way for Disney to engage their audience and provide more content while people across the world are practicing social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows fans to enjoy one of the biggest blockbusters from the comfort of their own homes during this challenging time..
According to Variety, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will begin streaming on Disney Plus two months ahead of its initial schedule. The film will make its debut on the streaming platform on May 4, 2020 – otherwise known as Star Wars Day among fans (you know, may the force be with you and all that). Only the Netherlands will have a different debut date of May 5, because of the country’s Remembrance Day holiday.
With the addition of this film, fans will be able to stream all nine Star Wars films in one place. Disney Plus also has other content prepared for May 4th, namely the eight-episode docuseries Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian and the series finale of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Due to the current pandemic, Disney is leaning heavily on Disney Plus to be the outlet for its entertainment content. This is why Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is being moved to an earlier date, much like how Frozen II came to the platform 3 months before its scheduled date. The move was described as Disney’s way of “surprising families with some fun and joy during this challenging period”.
These decisions certainly make sense given that since April 8, Disney Plus has surpassed 50 million subscribers globally.
