Top Online Platforms to Stream Barbie Movies – Top

Opening the same week as Christopher Nolan’s biographical epic Oppenheimer, the new live-action Barbie movie is drawing similar early praise and anticipation from audiences. So much so that many people are electing to double feature the releases by seeing both movies on the same day. If you’re not planning to do that yourself (it’s a pretty sharp contrast of styles), then you’re probably wondering when you’ll be able to watch Barbie online.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, one of the best directors to emerge in the past decade, we know Barbie will open in theaters everywhere July 21st, 2023. This is a Warner Bros release, so we can pretty easily guess exactly when you’ll be able to watch the movie online, when (and where) you’ll be able to stream the movie, and when you’ll be able to buy physical copies of what Warner Bros is certainly hoping will make up for a dismal summer thus far.

First of all, how long is Barbie going to be in theaters? Assuming the film is a success, and it seems highly probable that it will be for the ailing Warner Bros-Discovery brand, Barbie will play in theaters for around 45 days. This is the normal theatrical window for a release of this size. From there the movie will make its way to VOD rental and purchase around the first week of September, 2023.

But what if you want to wait for the movie to show up on a streaming service? As you may already know, Warner Bros-Discovery also owns Max, formerly known as HBO Max. It’s almost a certainty that Barbie will be on Max at some point after September for at least US viewers, after the movie has had enough time to earn as a rental or digital purchase. You can expect the movie to be on Max sometime in October or even November, 2023. If you’re outside of the US where Max is not supported, streaming Barbie is a little more unclear, but you can expect it to be available for digital rental at the very least.

A physical media release has not been announced by Warner Bros, and it’s difficult to say what the company is ultimately going to do in this regard, given the myriad of ways they have tried to save money. It doesn’t seem impossible anymore that WB will simply not bother to release the film on DVD or Blu-ray at all. However, this is only speculation, and for now, you can assume that more likely than not, Barbie will be available on physical media shortly after it premieres as a VOD option in early September.

Despite dozens of direct-to-video releases (around 40 total) for the iconic doll over the past several decades, the 2023 Barbie film will mark the first live-action release for one of the most famous toys ever made.

The film will begin with Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling), her, um, companion? Pal? (Really, what’s going on with Ken and Barbie anyway?) in Barbie Land. Living among a range of other Barbies and Kens, the two are soon expelled from their life in plastic and presumably fantastic paradise to what’s basically our world.

The film is expected to be a massive celebration of all things Barbie but expect some humorous commentary and observations on one of the most beloved toys of all time. Barbie looks to be following the tradition of films like The Lego Movie. In other words, expect from Barbie some meta-humor, a story of finding one’s place in the world, and enough easter eggs to sink Barbie’s Tropical Cruise Ship Playset.
