Tim Tszyu may eventually face off with Jermell Charlo but even if the megafight does go ahead, his American rival doesn’t seem to think it will be much of a challenge.
Charlo, the undisputed super welterweight champion, dealt Tszyu a setback to his hopes of securing the biggest fight of his career back in July when he announced he would be moving up two weight divisions to instead take on super middleweight undisputed champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Tszyu is the mandatory WBO challenger for Charlo’s crown and had previously been scheduled to fight Charlo earlier this year, only for a hand injury to see the American postpone the bout twice.
Speaking to Showtime Boxing ahead of Sunday’s main event, Charlo said he was initially willing to fight Tszyu before the historic challenge of facing Alvarez presented itself.
Although even if Charlo does agree to fight Tszyu at some point in the future, he also made it clear what he thinks of the Australian at this point of his career.
“I know Tim Tszyu is a challenger but he does nothing for my career,” Charlo said on Showtime Boxing ahead of Sunday’s fight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.
“He still needs to build up himself and build up his career — and I’m cool with that. But I was down to fight him anyway. But we ran into the hand injury and prepared ourselves and got better and now it’s like, ‘We get an opportunity like this. We’re going to take that’.”
Tszyu may get his shot at Charlo at some point though, with the American declaring he is “not done” at 154 pounds.
For the time being though, Charlo’s focus is on becoming the first male fighter to become undisputed in two different weight classes in the four-belt era.

“I made history before so it feels good,” Charlo said.
“I know that feeling — that hunger, that urge to want to make history and do something your children talk about… that’s beyond the dream. I’ve come to the point where I can be undisputed in two weight divisions. I’ve got to seize that moment and opportunity.
“I believe I’ve got the speed, I’ve got the power. I know one thing about it is Canelo, he’s strong and I feel like I probably pack a bigger punch than Canelo. That’s going to be the surprise… I’m not just a little 154-pounder when I walk around and I’m not going to struggle to make 168.
“We’re going to have a great time, training camp has been good, I’ve already been training for months.”
Charlo also confirmed that his hand is “great’ and “ready” to go for September 30, when he will step in the ring with Alvarez.
Tszyu criticised Charlo for “ducking” him when it was confirmed earlier in July that he would be passing up a fight with the Australian to instead challenge Alvarez.
“I was in a state of shock. Couldn’t believe it,” Tszyu said on a media call.
“But after a few days of that anger, I moved on.
“When one door closes another opens, and I’m 100 per cent positive there are bigger things on the horizon than little Charlo.”
Tim Tszyu may eventually face Jermell Charlo, but Charlo does not believe it will be a challenging fight. Charlo, the undisputed super welterweight champion, chose to move up two weight classes to take on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez instead of fighting Tszyu. Tszyu is the mandatory WBO challenger for Charlo’s crown and had previously been scheduled to fight him earlier this year, but the bout was postponed due to a hand injury. Charlo stated that Tszyu does nothing for his career at this point, but he may still fight him in the future. Charlo’s focus is currently on becoming undisputed in two weight classes by fighting Alvarez.
