Melissa Highsmith News
After fifty years, one of the country’s oldest mystery missing person cases has been solved. When she was just 21 months old, Melissa Highsmith was abducted in Fort Worth, Texas, on August 23, 1971. She has now been reunited with her family after many years thanks to an anonymous tip and DNA analysis that put an end to a remarkable 50-year mystery.
Melissa described the Thanksgiving reunion to CBS News as “overwhelming but also the most wonderful feeling in the world.” “I’m really overjoyed; words can’t express how I feel. Alta Apantenco, her biological mother, said WFAA, “I’m very pleased to see my daughter, who I didn’t believe I would ever see again.
Melissa’s mother had gone to Fort Worth as a single mother at age 21 after divorcing her partner, Jeffrie Highsmith, around the time of Melissa’s abduction. Apantenco desperately needed a babysitter to care for her little kid while she started working as a waitress, so she posted an ad in the neighborhood newspaper.
Ruth Johnson, the so-called sitter she hired, brought up the infant girl, who was 21 months old, from her mother’s roommate’s care while Apantenco was at work. According to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the roommate said that the woman who arrived to pick up the infant was “nice” and “dressed to impress,” including white gloves, sunglasses, and a bonnet around her head.
Then, in September 2022, the NCMEC got a tip about a possible sighting in Charleston, South Carolina. The tipper claimed to have recognized the woman from NCMEC’s open cases’ digitally aged faces. The tip was a dead end, and the Highsmith family had to fly from Texas to Charleston in October to talk to residents about the case and raise awareness.
However, Jeffrie Highsmith’s father underwent a 23andMe DNA test, connecting him to Melissa’s biological offspring. Her Facebook page was quickly discovered after a fast online search, and the other kids of Jeffrie and Apantenco contacted the 23AndMe connection and convinced her to meet.
“I started to cry… It’s very emotional after 51 years,” Jeffrie told CBS News.

The family received the final assurance they required that they had located one another upon viewing her baby pictures and discovering they had a certain birthmark. Since then, Apantenco has discovered that her infant daughter spent the majority of her life in Fort Worth and was raised less than 20 minutes away.
Melissa, who was married and went by the name Melanie Walden, claimed she grew raised in an “abusive” home and “didn’t feel loved as a child,” even though she had no idea she had been abducted.
“When I was 15 years old, I fled. I ventured outside. I took the necessary steps to get by. I was a street worker,” she admitted.
But the photographic evidence particularly convinced her. “Once I saw the baby picture, and I put my baby picture against it — it’s like my twin,” the woman exclaimed.
Melissa spoke with the person who had raised her and got the answers she needed.
“I asked her, ‘Is there anything you need to tell me?’ and it was confirmed that she knew that I was baby Melissa so that just made it real,” the woman said.
Her kidnapper hasn’t identified another way.
