At the recent 2019 Writers Guild of America Awards, several surprises unfolded, leading to panic amongst some in the film industry. The award for Best Original Screenplay, commonly considered to be a significant precursor to the Oscars, went to “Eighth Grade” by Bo Burnham, instead of the expected frontrunners “Roma” and “Green Book.” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay, again surprising industry insiders. These unexpected wins have caused speculation about potential upsets at the upcoming Academy Awards, leaving many in a state of uncertainty and anxiety..
Well, that did not go well for me. Both of my predictions for this weekend’s Writers Guild of America Awards did not pan out. I had Green Book and BlacKkKlansman down for wins, but both of them were upset.
Your winner in the Original Screenplay category was Eighth Grade, written by Bo Burnham. This was actually not as large an upset as some may say, considering Eighth Grade has been well represented across the board this awards season, chief among them a win at the Directors Guild for First Time Director, which also went to Burnham.
In the adapted category, we did have a big upset with Can You Ever Forgive Me? winning. It seemed as if BlacKkKlansman had that category all to itself, but nope, the writing team of Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty were given the win.
In the last ten years, whoever wins here goes on to win at the Oscars, so does that mean these scripts will win on Sunday? Definitely not for Eighth Grade since it is not nominated, but the script for Can You Ever Forgive Me? does have a shot. I will have some further updates on my final Oscar predictions up later this week.

The recent Writers Guild of America Awards had some surprising winners. In the Original Screenplay category, Eighth Grade took home the award, which was not a huge upset considering its success throughout the awards season. In the adapted category, Can You Ever Forgive Me? came out on top, beating out the expected winner, BlacKkKlansman. It is worth noting that in the past decade, the winners of these awards have gone on to win at the Oscars, so there is a possibility that Can You Ever Forgive Me? could be a contender. More updates on Oscar predictions will be provided later.
