According to Deadline, Sony has decided to push back the release date for Venom: Let There Be Carnage by one week. It was initially supposed to be released September 17, but now has a new release date of September 24, 2021.

With covid restrictions lifting, markets like Los Angeles and New York have began reopening in stages. Lesser restrictions would mean more people allowed into the cinemas, so movie studios are trying to find ideal dates to release their movies. Sometimes even moving the movie back by a week can make a huge difference (Warner Bros. just did the same with Mortal Kombat).

The movie has a shared opening weekend with Paramount’s Antoine Fuqua actioner Infinite, there is the Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark, Michael Showalter’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Stephen Chbosky’s adaptation of acclaimed Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen. All these movies aren’t exactly blockbusters, and while they will draw their own niche groups (I can’t wait for Dear Evan Hansen), Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the most well-known of the lot.

The first Venom film, released over the first weekend in October in 2018, held the October opening record of US$80.2 million in domestic sales and ultimately grossed over US$850 million worldwide. Sony has high expectations for this film, and we’ll see if the shift in dates pays off.
