Christopher Nolan, renowned filmmaker known for his work on movies like Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy, might be parting ways with Warner Bros. for his next project. According to sources, Nolan is shopping around a new film to several studios, exploring potential distribution deals. This comes as a surprise as Nolan has had a long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., releasing his last 10 movies with them. While the exact reasons for this separation are unclear, Nolan’s desire for theatrical releases and disagreements over profit-sharing might be contributing factors. It remains to be seen which studio will secure Nolan’s next movie..
According to The Wall Street Journal, Christopher Nolan’s next film will probably not be with Warner Bros.
Why The Discontent?
The news report indicated that Nolan will most likely look elsewhere, due mainly to his feelings regarding the HBO Max release strategy that Warner Bros. has concocted for this year. Nolan previously called HBO Max “the worst streaming service”. An excerpt from the piece reported:
“After spending years as a top Warner Bros. director, Christopher Nolan, who wrote and directed last year’s Tenet is unlikely to return to the studio with his next project, in part because he was disappointed with the studio’s hybrid distribution strategy for 2021, according to people familiar with the matter.”
The filmmaker and the studio have had a long-standing partnership, which dates back nearly twenty years, since Nolan’s 2002 film Insomnia, and just last year, Nolan’s Tenet was released in the midst of the pandemic.
Other Filmmakers Weigh In
Nolan isn’t the only filmmaker to disapprove of this strategy. James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, was not pleased due to the lackluster compensation offer for him and other profit participants in the film. Dune director Denis Villeneuve, via an article he penned for Variety, also blasted the decision, targeting his frustration at Warner Bros. Parent company AT&T.
He wrote: “With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here.”
Will Warner Bros. come to regret this strategy? Only time will tell.
