From the very beginning, the Warriors took control of the match, swiftly scoring points and maintaining their lead. Their offense consistently found ways to penetrate the Bulldogs’ defense, while their defense shut down any attempts by the Bulldogs to score. With their exceptional performance, the Warriors secured an impressive shutout win, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the field..
MCINTYRE – Before Friday, the three previous meetings between the GMC Prep and Wilkinson County football teams had been close, low-scoring affairs.
Only 44 total points were scored by the Bulldogs and Warriors in the 2020 through 2022 contests. Wilco surpassed that number all by itself at home Friday night, gouging the GMC defense on the way to a 47-0 region victory.
The two teams couldn’t have looked any more different. The Warriors (2-0 region, 3-3 overall) were fast, flying to the football on defense and flying with it on offense as they sought revenge for the last three years. The Bulldogs (0-2, 1-6) played flat. It served as a stark reminder for just how different this year’s squad is from the last couple. Only a few players that suited up Friday were among those to help GMC football to what was a program-best three-game winning streak against the neighboring county school. There is work to be done if the Bulldogs want to get back into the postseason for a fourth consecutive year.
Wilco, however, has set itself up nicely. With two region wins, the Warriors have all but guaranteed themselves a playoff slot already thanks to the dominant effort against GMC. The host team’s second drive produced the first points of the night. Taking a pitch on an option left, senior Jeremiah Hill ran some 50 yards down to the Bulldog 12 just over halfway through the opening period. A penalty backed the Warriors up to the 22, but it turned out to be just more yardage for Hill to rack up as he carried the football to paydirt following a double handoff inside.
Wilco rolled from that point forward. A four-and-out by the GMC offense opened the door for Warrior QB Quenterrion Sanford to find Myles Cobb on a pass deep down the right-middle of the field. A bad angle taken by the Bulldog safety allowed Cobb to keep going for a long TD, making it 14-0 Wilco.
GMC got its first first down in the final minute of the starting quarter on a short pass to Cam Lango. He churned up about 12 yards to move the chains, but it was a play the Bulldogs would go back to the well on too many times Friday as the Warrior defense snuffed it out for much of the game’s remainder. That GMC drive was ended when a fourth-and-1 run attempt was stopped cold.
Sanford and company turned that opportunity into points as well, this time pump faking on a short throw before sending the ball deep to a wide open and waiting Rahiym Thompkins. The receiver finished the play off from there to help his team go up 22-0. Standout sophomore running back Terrelle Blount got in on the action next Wilco possession. He was reversing field at will Friday night, running around Bulldog defenders even when it looked as though he was hemmed up. Blount scored on either side of halftime to make it 35-0.
Chaquavion Hall (short TD run out of the wildcat) and CaMari Smith (fumble returned for touchdown while covering a kickoff) put the game’s final marks on the scoreboard.
Both teams will be back in action for their respective homecomings next week. One team, Wilco, will be looking to continue its momentum when it welcomes Twiggs County. The other, GMC Prep, wants to create a little momentum of its own when Hancock Central comes to Davenport Field.
Wilkinson County dominated GMC Prep in a 47-0 victory, with the Warriors showing strong offense and defense. This win puts the Warriors in a good position for the playoffs. Jeremiah Hill, Quenterrion Sanford, and Terrelle Blount were standout players for Wilco, contributing to the team’s success. GMC Prep struggled to produce points and will need to improve if they want to make it to the postseason. Both teams will be playing their homecoming games next week, with Wilco looking to continue their winning streak and GMC Prep hoping to gain some momentum.
