Week 1 Recap: Highlights and Scores

Week 1 of the NFL season saw impressive performances and surprising upsets. The Super Bowl champion, Kansas City Chiefs, displayed their dominance by defeating the Houston Texans 34-20. The Green Bay Packers stunned the Minnesota Vikings with a 43-34 victory, thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ exceptional performance. Tom Brady had a disappointing debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as they fell to the New Orleans Saints 34-23. The Los Angeles Chargers secured a 16-13 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals, with rookie quarterback Joe Burrow showing promise. These exciting games kicked off the season with plenty of excitement and unpredictability..

Central Ohio high school football: Scores, quick hits from Week 1

The high school football season has kicked off. That means it’s time for The Dispatch to kick off another season of Friday night (and sometimes Thursday night) coverage.

East was the only Columbus-area team to take the field Thursday, and sportswriter Dave Purpura was at Harley Field to watch junior standout Taizaun Burns and the Tigers face Dayton Meadowdale.

On Friday night, we covered Pickerington Central at Olentangy Liberty, Westerville Central at Westerville North and Westerville South at Dublin Jerome.

Friday night quick hits

Pickerington Central 28, Olentangy Liberty 17

Perhaps fittingly for longtime defensive coordinator Jeff Lomonico’s first game as Central’s head coach, the Tigers’ defense stole the show. They sacked Patriots quarterback Andrew Leonard seven times, with linebacker Myles Harrison amassing a career-high three. Lineman Makai Evans added two, and defensive back Mike Jones added an interception off a tipped pass and a fumble recovery. Liberty was held to minus-19 yards, and Leonard was 21-of-43 passing for 273 yards. “We kept the pressure up and attacked them every down,” Harrison said. “Once I figured out their tackles and how to play them, I’d felt like I’d have a better time going at him and getting closer to (Leonard), more of a one-on-one thing. They were big but we were faster, quicker and more physical.”
With expected top running back Anthony Madison sidelined by an injury, Central went to a run game by committee. Kaejuan Alexander emerged as Friday’s standout, rushing for 84 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. “I was not expecting that but I had to step up,” said Alexander, a junior who scored from 5 yards in the first quarter and 1 in the second to make it 21-3. “I still feel like I didn’t play up to my standards. I wanted to rip off more long runs, but I got what I got.” Aaron Heller added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first, and four backs — including quarterback Rocco Williams — got carries. Williams, a sophomore, was 7-of-11 passing for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Field position played a big part in helping Central build its first-half lead. Sherone White Jr. had kick returns of 33 and 14 yards, and the Tigers’ average starting position on its first four possession was midfield.
Liberty, which scored first on Braden Scanlon’s 34-yard field goal halfway through the first quarter, injected some drama with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Jake Struck scored from 2 yards with 3:49 left, the Patriots recovered the ensuing onside kick and Leonard threw a 53-yard score to Jake Nelson 40 seconds later to make it 28-17. Liberty got the ball back one more time in the final two minutes but could not get inside the Central 30. “I have a lot of belief and faith in this offense,” said Patriots coach John Sansbury, who also was making his debut. “The film will show if not for a couple mistakes here and there, it could have been a different game, but that’s how football is.”

Dublin Jerome 30, Westerville South 15

One game may not tell the story of a season, but in the opener, Jerome looked as strong as last year’s squad, which earned the No. 1 seed in Division I, Region 2 and finished 9-3. The Celtics dominated South, building a 30-0 lead behind senior quarterback Kyle White and a cast of contributors on defense. The Wildcats, a Division II, Region 7 team coming off an 11-2 season, turned the ball over on downs in Jerome territory three times in the first half, and another drive ended in a Cole Saneholtz interception at the goal line. “I think we came out and really showed what we could do this year,” said Jerome senior two-way lineman Dane Wleklinski, a Virginia commit.
White, the successor to 2023 graduate Zakk Tschirhart, had a hand in all four of the Celtics’ touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 7-yard keeper and made it 23-0 with a 7-yard run on fourth-and-1. He helped set up the latter touchdown with a 50-yard scramble. White also threw touchdown passes of 38 and 44 yards to Braydon Alford. “I had a little nerves this morning when I was waking up, but my dad told me before (the game): ‘Football’s not supposed to be perfect, you’ve just got to play.”

Westerville North 21, Westerville Central 12

In former Ohio State quarterback Stanley Jackson Sr.’s first game as coach, North ended years of frustration against its crosstown rival. The Warriors snapped a 13-game losing streak in the series. North’s other win came in the first meeting in 2008 (21-17). Jackson succeeded Bryan Johnson, who guided North for five seasons. “We’re 1-0. It’s a step in the right direction,” Jackson said. “It’s been since (2008). It matters in this community. You have open enrollment. You win this game, you win recruiting, so it’s a big deal for us. It’s a big win for these seniors. … I’m excited for our kids.”
With North leading 7-6, Trey McDonald intercepted a Jaystin Gwinn pass on Central’s first play of the third quarter, returning it for a 42-yard touchdown and a 14-6 lead. “We just needed to get a play,” McDonald said. “It was a tight game at the half. We just dialed in in the locker room and just made a play.”
Ronald Jackson, the coach’s son, helped lead the Warriors’ offense, completing 20 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Stevens rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries, including a 28-yard touchdown on fourth-and-16 for the game’s first score in the opening quarter. Vari Adams made an acrobatic 23-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter for a 21-6 lead.
Gwinn was a bright spot Central, rushing for 135 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Central coach Ed Miley saw positives in the loss. “Last year we started 1-4,” Miley said. “We were 1-0 at the start, but we were 1-4 at the halfway point (of the regular season). Our kids have worked hard enough to win football games. We can’t let this loss turn into another loss, so we have to come back and get to work.”

Thursday night quick hits

Columbus East 36, Dayton Meadowdale 6

In some respects, East’s win might have been ideal for coach Mike Bell. Junior quarterback Taizaun Burns rushed for 245 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and passed for another score, and the team ran for 264 yards in all to come out on top despite committing 19 penalties — 14 in the first half, 11 of which were for holding and four of which negated touchdowns. “We had a lot of self-inflicted wounds, but it was all things we can correct,” Bell said. “I’ll be on film (Thursday night). There is a lot we can improve in a week. We executed some things well but we didn’t always finish well. If we can correct those things, they sky is the limit.”
Burns, who earned first-team all-state in Division IV last fall after leading the Tigers to a 7-0 start and 10-2 record, made his first career start at quarterback. He scampered 19 yards on the game’s first play, and after successive penalties pushed the Tigers from the Meadowdale 26-yard line back to midfield, he ran almost untouched for a 50-yard touchdown. Burns tossed a 16-yard touchdown to Daequan Lindsey on the next series and scored on an 11-yard run midway through the third quarter to make it 22-6. “I wasn’t even planning to play quarterback until maybe two or three weeks ago, but I had to move for my team,” Burns said. “You have to adapt to survive, so I had to adapt to the situation and get the win for this team.”
Not to be overlooked, the Tigers’ defense came up with several huge plays. Lindsey and Sean Wilkes each had multiple tackles for loss, Anthony Shields returned a third-quarter interception to the Meadowdale 7 but a false start and fumble stymied the drive, and Xavier Hunter returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth to make it 30-6. Burns even broke up a pass as a defensive back. “We fought through a lot of adversity … and we were resilient,” said Wilkes, a senior receiver and cornerback. “It was an ugly game. We know the mistakes we made. (The mistakes) will be a good thing if we fix them. But we made a lot of big plays. We had a lot of fight.”
Bell and his players acknowledged being happy to start a new season after the hype of a year ago, when the Tigers reached a Region 15 semifinal. With that, he said, came some nerves that manifested in the multiple penalties. “We had to reset the group and realize this is a new season,” Bell said. “We just have to try to be better and build on what we’ve accomplished.”

The Central Ohio high school football season has begun, and The Dispatch is providing coverage of Friday and Thursday night games. In one matchup, Pickerington Central defeated Olentangy Liberty 28-17, with the Tigers’ defense stealing the show and sacking the Patriots’ quarterback seven times. Dublin Jerome dominated Westerville South with a 30-15 victory, and Westerville North snapped a 13-game losing streak against Westerville Central with a 21-12 win. In the lone Thursday night game, Columbus East defeated Dayton Meadowdale 36-6, with junior quarterback Taizaun Burns leading the team to victory with 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
