Warner Bros. has announced that the highly anticipated superhero film, Wonder Woman 1984, will be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day, December 25th. This decision aims to provide audiences with the option to choose where and how they want to enjoy the film, considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The film, starring Gal Gadot as the iconic Wonder Woman, is a sequel set in the 1980s and follows her battle against new adversaries. For those of us who were wondering if Wonder Woman 1984 was going to be delayed once more, it appears that our fears were for naught, since it has been announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will keep its Christmas release date, and now it will also be available on HBO Max in the U.S, for one month. Unlike Disney’s Mulan, which required subscribers to top up an additional thirty dollars to see the film on Disney Plus, Wonder Woman 1984 can be viewed with no extra cost to HBO Max subscribers.
According to Collider, the news first broke via an unlisted trailer on Warner Bros. official YouTube account, and although unlisted, the trailer was briefly public, announcing the film’s simultaneous streaming and theatrical release date. The news was confirmed to be legitimate, and now the film’s official trailer has been reuploaded to announce the changes.
It truly is the best of both worlds, for moviegoers who can watch it in the cinema have that option, while others who can’t because cinemas around them are not operational then have the HBO Max option.
The film’s director Patty Jenkins took to Twitter to share the news, and it is clear that much like Disney’s early release of Hamilton despite the initial plans, the release of Wonder Woman 1984 will hopefully bring some much needed joy to the season.

Jenkins also mentioned that they are working on a programme that would allow those at home to rent their own theatres out to screen the film. As for international fans, who don’t have access to HBO Max and cinematic spaces, Jenkins reassured them that there are plans to keep the film in theatres for as long as possible, to hopefully allow as many people as possible to see it.
