Director Zack Snyder has revealed that he felt pressure to distance the Justice League film from its predecessor, Batman v Superman. In a recent interview, Snyder explained that the negative critical reception of Batman v Superman resulted in Warner Bros. wanting a lighter tone for Justice League. Snyder, who had initially planned a darker and more serious approach, struggled with the pressure to deviate from his original vision. The director ultimately left the film due to personal reasons, and the final version of Justice League underwent significant changes under director Joss Whedon..
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Zack Snyder talked about the pressures he faced while working on Justice League, and how Warner Bros wanted him to separate Justice League’s storyline from the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Of course this would be impossible, since Snyder had planned a five movie arc, and the events of Batman v Superman lead directly into Justice League.
Snyder said: “I feel like the studio had this hatred for Batman v Superman. There was this pressure on me to divorce the movie from Batman v Superman, which I didn’t want to do, and which I didn’t do. Frankly, it’s a trilogy of movies, so it continues the story. The narrative is affected by the things that have gone before it and that way it’s able to realize this world that sets up the Darkseid invasion, for what was planned to be a five-movie arc. It definitely finishes with this version of the film, with our heroes having mended their personal wounds and joined together as a family.”
Batman v Superman was a box office success, raking in US$873 million globally. However, response to the film was largely divisive amongst the critics and fans, which led to Warner Bros. organising reshoots for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, since the vibe and atmosphere was similarly dark and gritty.
Snyder’s vision is nonetheless out in the world now, and despite Warner Bros. having no plans to continue this storytelling arc, at least the fans got to see his cut of Justice League.
